| | Eugene Ahn says | Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1:15AM Hmm, mythology. Handstanding must be from the realm of Hermes the trickster. Hermes is one of the few gods who moves in both the above world and the below world. He invented the lyre and it symbolizes an instrument that allows us to express the moving power of soul. As scholar David Tacey notes, "Hermes awards Apollo the lyre which will bring a universe of lyricism, poetry and rhythm into the psychic domain of this solar and upright God." Stuffy Apollo even calls upon the brilliance of inversions when he beats Marsyas in a contest of musicianship. By turning his lyre upside down and playing a tune just as masterfully, Apollo demonstrates a prowess that is simply beyond this upright world. This brings to mind the antics of Jimi Hendrix, another master performer who could play his instrument upside down. | |

|
| | Eugene Ahn says | Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1:15AM This is near the back garden, behind the ampitheatre. I think this view offers a good comparison of the two styles of wall panel surfacing on this unconventional building. The wall on the right side of the photo features panels with a polished, reflective finish. The wall on the left side of the picture has panels that are brushed down to a dull matte finish. When the concert hall first opened in 2003, the entire building looked more like the mirror-like wall on the right. But neighbors complained about sunlight being reflected into their windows. The mirrored walls were overheating nearby offices and apartments, and blinding the people who occupied them. So the walls had to be refinished to something less reflective, like the way it is on the left wall. | |

| | Eugene Ahn says | Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1:15AM What better way to recognize Cinco de Mayo in Shanghai than with some yoga? I caught a Yogic Arts basics class over on the west side of city center with celebrity yoga master Duncan Wong. It was a fascinating practice. Lively, unexpected, entertaining, challenging, and very different from his ultra-slick DVD that I reviewed for Yogi Times magazine last year. The class atmosphere was part love nest, part boot camp, and part culture clash mash-up. The practice left me feeling extremely in touch with my body. Testament to that: lifting up into handstand in the chill-out lounge after class happened seemingly without any thought or effort at all. | |

| | Eugene Ahn says | Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1:15AM Southern California winters are kind of like this. Sunny days, blue skies. A balmy warm feeling even though there might be snow on the ground. I spent three hours the day before inverting at a yoga workshop. This morning, I woke up, did a handstand, spent forty-five minutes trying to find a way past the L.A. Marathon, another forty-five to get the the mountain. Less than the time of a typical commute. Top of the mountain on a beautiful day. Desert on one side, urban grid on the other. | |

Turns out she had a seat on the same Korean Air flight out to Asia. Her destination was Seoul. I would be finding a connecting flight in Incheon and continuing on to Ho Chi Minh City. We had a short, cordial chat before boarding the plane, and she agreed to take a picture of me doing a handstand. She seemed a little skeptical about the whole thing, but I managed to stick a good long handstand on the first and only try, and she took just one shot before becoming bored with it all.

It helps to lift up into handstand with a little bit of momentum and hold the legs straight in a scissor formation, with each foot on either side of upright. | |

| | Eugene Ahn says | Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 1:15AM This airport was a very chaotic place and I recommend preparing yourself if you have to travel to or through its operations. I spent an unexpected 36+ hour layover because nobody could locate my baggage. It turns out South African Airways had forwarded it on to my final destination without me and without telling me. | |
