Photographs: Up and down

Earth > United States > California > Mount Baldy

Around noon, the chairlift that takes skiers and snowboarders to the top of the mountain began to overheat and was shut down as a safety precaution. An employee wearing a floppy straw hat rode a snowmobile back and forth from the lift to the lodge, at one point ferrying a floor fan as part of the solution. The delay kept many standing in line -- a perfect opportunity to practice a few handstands.

Southern California winters are kind of like this. Sunny days, blue skies. A balmy warm feeling even though there might be snow on the ground. I spent three hours the day before inverting at a yoga workshop. This morning, I woke up, did a handstand, spent forty-five minutes trying to find a way past the L.A. Marathon, another forty-five to get the the mountain. Less than the time of a typical commute. Top of the mountain on a beautiful day. Desert on one side, urban grid on the other.
